The reasons for the strike

"The National Boards of Cgil, Cisl, Uil called a one-day general strike for Tuesday 16 April in order to support the proposals of the confederal trade unions aimed at opposing the positions of the Government".

In a unitary press release Cgil, Cisl, Uil confirm the reasons for the strike and explain how it will take place. The trade unions mobilise:

  • against the proxy laws on Article 18 of the Worker’s Statute and arbitration

  • against the proposed abolition or dramatic decrease of social security contributions

  • for employment and development in Southern Italy

  • in support of the proposals made by Cgil, Cisl, Uil on taxes, school and social and medical policies.

"All the workers will take part in the general strike by refraining from working for the entire working day. Industrial sectors will take part in the general strike according to the provisions of Law 146/90 and relevant enforcement agreements. In preparation of the great day of fight of 16 April, all structures are called to carry out the widest awareness campaign on workplaces and in the territory in order to prepare the general strike; this will be achieved with the participation of workers and pensioners in the meetings called by the three trade unions on a unitary basis".

"Cgil, Cisl, Uil, by means of all media – press, radio, television – will make an extraordinary effort on 16 April in order to involve all citizens in the support of the reasons for this strike and the proposals made by the Confederal Trade Union. On the occasion of the general strike, demonstrations will be held in each Italian town and city in the morning or in the afternoon, according to the decisions that will be made by the regional confederal boards"
